Appointment of ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ's Dean of Students
Sent on behalf of Professor Anthony C. Masi, Provost
Principal Heather Munroe-Blum and I are delighted to announce that the Board of Governors, at its meeting of April 16, 2007, approved the appointment of Professor Jane Everett as ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ's Dean of Students. Professor Everett's term will start on July 1, 2007, and end on May 31, 2012.
Reporting to the Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning), the Dean of Students has primary responsibility for championing student rights, fostering academic integrity and providing impartial oversight of the Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures. In addition to leading the redefinition of the Office of the Dean, Dr. Everett will be working to facilitate the exchange, development and dissemination of best practices in a number of priority areas: academic integrity and the responsible conduct of research; academic advising and mentoring; diversity in the classroom and on campus; the integration of francophone students to ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ; and the promotion of a community centred on learning. It should be noted that the Office of the Dean of Students will no longer be responsible for managing Student Services.
Professor Everett has been a member of the Department of French Language and Literature at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ since 1988. Her areas of specialization are Quebec francophone literature and literary translation theory. Her publishing record includes critical editions of correspondence and other writings by the novelist Gabrielle Roy, articles in journals and in conference proceedings, chapters in collective volumes, reviews and translations. In her current research projects, funded by SSHRC, she is studying the English translations of works by Gabrielle Roy.
Professor Everett is an able administrator, sought out for her collegial, consensus-building style. She has served as both Director of Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Program Director in her Department, and, on several occasions, as Acting Associate Dean (Student Affairs) in the Faculty of Arts. She has been Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, since January 2006. We thank her for taking on the vital role of Dean of Students.
At this time, we extend our thanks to the members of the Advisory Committee on the Appointment of a Dean of Students for their work.
We would also like to formally thank Dr. Linda Jacobs Starkey for her dedicated service as Interim Dean of Students and for her ongoing contributions to the reorganization of Student Life and Learning at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ. Dr. Starkey has distinguished herself as a committed and capable administrator who has contributed to the advancement of student interests as Associate Dean of Students and during her tenure as Interim Dean. Dr. Starkey has agreed to resume the position of Associate Dean of Students and, independent of that role, to temporarily assume the position of Executive Director of Services for Students. Reporting to the Deputy Provost, the Executive Director will enhance the student experience through the management and continuing development of student services.
Sincerely,
Professor Anthony C. Masi Provost
