Aroused Redmen explode for eight in final period

TORONTO – Co-captain Eric L’Italien of Ste. Foy, Que., tallied twice and added a pair of assists as the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Redmen routed Ryerson 9-2 in OUA men’s university hockey at the George Bell Arena in Toronto Saturday.

The victory avenged last week’s shocking 3-0 home-ice loss to Ryerson and extended ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s road record against the Rams to 16 consecutive wins in Hogtown, dating back to 1989. ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, which outshot the Rams 56-21, is marching on a 7-2-1 pace since opening the season with four consecutive losses.

Serbia native Marko Kovacevic broke open a 1-1 tie with his first of two markers in the final period to spark an eight-goal Redmen outburst in a span of 14 minutes and three seconds.

Freshman netminder Danny Mireault made 19 saves and improved his regular season record to 5-4-1.

Other Redmen marksmen were Sam Bloom, Simon Marcotte-Légaré, Alexandre Picard-Hooper, Guillaume Doucet and defenceman Ken Morin.

Kevin Day and Greg Payne replied for the Rams, who fell to 3-11-0 and occupy the cellar in the OUA Mid-East.

Goaltender Pierre Beaulieu, who had shutout the Redmen a week earlier, was credited with 46 saves in a losing cause. He conceded nine goals before being mercifully lifted after the last goal and was replaced by understudy Louie George, who was called upon to make only one save in the final 90 seconds of the contest.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, which owns a 9-10-1 record overall, including 7-6-1 in league play, gets a 40-day break to prepare for exams and their own Pylon Cup tournament, an intensely-competitive intra-squad competition for a cup originally constructed from a pylon. The team resumes play Jan. 9-10, with home games against York (7-6-1) and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks (2-11-2), a second-year team from Oshawa, which will be making its first-ever trip to McConnell Arena.
