Bettez busts records as Martlets swarm Stingers

MONTREAL – Ann-Sophie Bettez and Vanessa Davidson each tallied seven points as No.1-ranked ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ swarmed the Concordia Stingers en route to a convincing 10-0 whitewash in women’s university hockey at the Ed Meagher arena, Saturday.

The result extended the Martlets’s win streak to 38 consecutive games against Canadian university opponents and marked their 24th straight victory over Concordia, dating back to a 2-1 road loss on Feb. 5, 2006.

Bettez, a sophomore from Sept-Iles, Que., tied a single-game school record with five goals, equaled another ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ mark with seven points, broke the team’s single-season record for goals and tied the Quebec university record. Davidson netted four markers and added three assists.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, which led 3-0 after one period and 6-0 after two, outshot the Stingers 41-15. Goaltender Charline Labonté, who stopped Donna Ringrose on a penalty shot early in the third period, registered her 47th career shutout in her school record 100th career start, surpassing the 99 starts made by Kim St-Pierre, between 1998 and 2004.

Rounding out the scoring were rearguards Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., and Catherine Ward, each of whom scored once and added a helper. Ward, from the Town of Mount Royal, Que., was credited with the game-winner on an unassisted goal at 4:55 of the opening period.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will host Carleton at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m.

MARTLET MURMURS: Overshadowed in all the scoring was Marie-Andree Leclerc-Auger, a freshman from Sherbrooke, Que., who assisted on four goals…Bettez moved into second place among CIS scoring leaders with 16 goals and 34 points in only nine games. The goal total broke the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ single season mark shared by Davidson (2005-06) and Katherine Safka (2002-03)… Her next objective will be to break the Quebec university record of 22 goals by Concordia’s Corinne Swirsky in 1999-00. Bettez, who skated for Team Canada at the under-22 world championships in Germany earlier this month, has already surpassed her freshman season totals of 15-14-29 in 18 contests which earned her CIS rookie-of-the-year honours.
