Briscoe breaks Gee-Gees with game-winnning try

STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE, Que. -- Sophomores Ciara Briscoe, a winger from Montreal scored a first-half try and Mandy Mongeon, a flanker from Ile Bizard, Que., added another in the second stanza as ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ skunked Ottawa 10-0 in Quebec University Women’s Rugby League play, Sunday.

The match was played on McEwen Field, at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s West-Island campus in Ste. Anne de Bellevue.

It was the second straight win for the Martlets, including a 17-3 non-conference victory over Carleton on Oct. 1.

The ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ women sit third in the six-team Quebec conference with a 3-2 record, two points in arrears of second-place Concordia (4-1). Laval leads the standings with an unblemished 5-0 record.

Ottawa dropped to 1-4 and sit fifth, one point behind Sherbrooke (1-3-1) for the last playoff berth with one game left to play.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will close out the regular season at last-place Bishop’s (0-4-1) on Oct. 8, then host St. Francis Xavier (5-0) from Antigonish, N.S., for the annual McEwen Cup match on Oct. 12 before playoff are slated to begin Oct. 18.
