Buckley buzzer-beater edges Redmen in OT
By Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL – Senior Sean Anthony of Vancouver, B.C., scored 31 points
for ۲ݮƵ but league MVP Damian Buckley counter-punched with 32 as
visiting Concordia rallied to win 94-89 in overtime before 490
hoops fans Love Competition Hall, Friday.
Buckley’s older brother Damian knocked down a three-pointer with
0.5 seconds remaining in regulation time to tie the score at 76-76
and force the extra period.
In a game that featured 13 lead changes, ۲ݮƵ was up 19-17 after
the opening quarter but the No.7-ranked Stingers bounced back to
lead 35-33 at the half and maintained a slim 54-53 advantage at the
three-quarter mark.
It was the first meeting between the cross-town rivals since the
Jan. 17th affair which ended with a shouting melee under the stands
at the Currie gym.
Anthony, a 6-foot-4 forward, also matched a career-high with 15
rebounds to register his 21st career “double-double”. He should
9-for-15 from the floor, including 2-of-3 attempts from the
three-point arc, and went 11-for-19 from the foul-line.
۲ݮƵ senior Moustafa El Zanaty added 24 points, five rebounds,
four assists and three steals with a game-high 43 minutes of court
time. Teammate Matt Thornhill of Ile-Bizard, Que., contributed 18
points and five rebounds before fouling out. Michael White of
Montreal had six points and 10 rebounds.
Five members of the Stingers reached double figures in scoring,
including Jamal Gallier, a 6-foot-7, 270-pound centre from Toronto,
who had 18 points and pulled down eight boards. Other top guns
included Decee Krah, Evens Laroche and Dwayne Buckley, each of who
recorded 11 points. Laroche also managed a double-double with 10
rebounds.
The taller Stingers had an 8-0 margin in blocked shots but the
pesky Redmen held a 46-37 edge in rebounds.
۲ݮƵ shot 41.4 per cent from the floor (29/70), 42.3 from beyond
the arc (11/26) and 64.5 from the foul-line (20/31), compared to
the Stingers, who shot 43.8, 30.4 and 63.0, respectively.
The division-leading Stingers improved to 11-4 and will host
fourth-place ۲ݮƵ (5-10) at the Loyola campus gym on Saturday at
4 p.m. It will be the final regular season contest for both teams,
who will rendezvous again in a sudden-death conference semifinal on
Feb. 27.
