Published: 9 September 2004

Get your free tickets now for Shirin Ebadi's "Democracy: The Precondition to Peace." This Beatty Memorial Lecture (organized with the Alumni Association and Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies as part of the 2004 Homecoming) promises to be a "sell-out" event. Go to the University Bookstore, 3420 McTavish, Special Order Desk (3rd floor, 514-398-3657), for tickets, limit of four per person.

Iranian Shirin Ebadi is the recipient of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize and the first Muslim woman to receive the honour. A fierce opponent of gender discrimination, she has used her training and experience as a lawyer to advocate for both women and children living in a traditional Islamic society. She has represented the mother of Iranian-born Canadian photographer Zahra Kazemi, who died last year under controversial circumstances while in detention in Iran after taking photos of a Tehran prison.

Saturday, October 16, 10:00 am to 11:30 am, Centre Mont-Royal, 2200 Mansfield
