High-tech know-how and high-level communication savvy - winning combo for ۲ݮƵ translation prize

Published: 7 August 2006

An information technology architect and systems engineer, Michèle Dubois was awarded the ۲ݮƵ Associates Prize in Translation (English to French) at the 2006 Spring Convocation. This prize is awarded annually to the student with the best overall academic record in the French option of the Certificate in Translation program.

Ms Dubois's passion for organization and technology has been a constant throughout an academic career which led to a first degree in engineering followed by a Graduate Diploma in Project Management. Add to that an interest in communication and a love of languages — a combination of interests that propelled her into translation studies and a new-found interest in localization in which she can undoubtedly draw upon her truly vast skill set.

After graduating from École Polytechnique with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1985, Ms Dubois became a member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec and at the same time started what turned out to be a stellar career in systems management and IT.

Wishing to capitalize on her knowledge of English and French, and driven to perfect her communication skills, she enrolled in ۲ݮƵ's Certificate in Translation program, which she completed with honours. Now building upon this solid foundation, she is continuing her studies in ۲ݮƵ's Graduate Diploma in Translation. As a translation student and recognized professional in engineering, Ms Dubois fully understands the benefits of belonging to the Quebec professional system. Consequently, she also became a student member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes du Québec.

“This mix of high-level communication skills and technical know-how is a winning combination in today’s market,” noted Translation Studies Director, James Archibald.

۲ݮƵ University offers a Certificate and a Graduate Diploma in translation, the combination of which gives access to the professional designation of traducteur agréé (Certified Translator) awarded by the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec, the regulatory board for certified translators in Quebec.
