ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ and Montreal Matters: The Environment

Series to focus on our environment – air, water and soil

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University is pleased to announce its participation in the sixth annual CBC "Montreal Matters" series, a month-long exploration of issues relevant to the community. The environment is the theme this year, and will be discussed in public lectures, special events and workshops. ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will co-host the following events on the topic:

Seminar: Media Literacy and Climate Change: What Al Gore did and what you and your students can do
October 18, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
The ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Centre for Educational Leadership, in collaboration with the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada, presents a day-long seminar for teachers on how Jacques Cousteau, David Suzuki and Al Gore have used media to inform the public, politicians and industry about the effects of human-induced climate change. Participants will explore ways to encourage positive action for climate change in the classroom. Cost: $175, registration required.

Storytelling weekend: "La randonnée contée" at the Mont St. Hilaire Nature Centre at the Gault Nature Reserve
October 20 and 21, 6:30-10 p.m.
Twelve storytellers from Canada and abroad tell fairy tales "under the stars," around six fires spread out throughout the mountain. Accompanied by a guide, visitors are brought to the different sites in groups of 20. Participation is limited to about 200 visitors per evening. Cost: $15 for adults, $10 for children, reservations required, Isabelle Pouliot, 450-467-1755.

Workshop: "The Beast of Beauty": A Workshop on Safe Cosmetics and Environmental Health
October 22, 6-8 p.m.
Madeleine Bird, coordinator of the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Health and Environment Awareness Project, will host "The Beast of Beauty," an interactive workshop exploring the issue of toxic chemicals in cosmetics. Topics will include regulatory framework, ingredients to watch out for and how to avoid purchasing toxic products. The workshop will conclude with a session on how to make your own cosmetics.

Public lecture: David Orr, leading environmental scientist
October 25, 6 p.m.
The ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ School of Environment presents a public lecture by David Orr, internationally respected environmentalist and professor of environmental studies and politics at Oberlin College. Professor Orr's career as a scholar, educator, writer, speaker and entrepreneur spans environment and politics, environmental education, campus greening, green building, ecological design and climate change. He is the author of Ecological Literacy, The Nature of Design and Earth in Mind: On Education, Environment and the Human Prospect, and he served as an advisor on the Leonardo DiCaprio documentary film The 11th Hour, in which he also appears.

Quebec Intercultural Storytelling Festival, "Women's Voices from the North"
October 25, 7:30 p.m.

Two aboriginal storytellers bring us on a journey from traditional storytelling to urban spoken word, from the white plains of the Yukon to the cities of the South, from long ago and far away to the world around us here and now. Spoken word poet Taqralik Partridge and storyteller Louise Profeit-Leblanc tell, rap and sing about women and the earth.
