At the second meeting of the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS), Professor Ram Jakhu was elected Chairman of the Legal and Regulatory Committee. The Institute of Air and Space Law and the Faculty congratulate him on this distinguished nomination, which demonstrates global recognition of the IASL's unique expertise in the field of air and space law.

Established in 2004 in the Netherlands, the IAASS is a non-profit association dedicated to furthering international cooperation and scientific advancement in the field of space systems safety.

The association promotes the development of space safety professionals and standards, and advocates the establishment of safety laws and regulatory bodies at national and international levels for the civil use of space. Its membership includes high officials from major space agencies and professionals who have made outstanding contributions or improvements to space safety. It functions through a Board of Directors and several specialized committees, one of which is the Space Safety Legal and Regulatory Committee to be led by Professor Jakhu.

The IAASS also carries out several space safety related studies. Currently, the Institute of Air and Space Law is doing research with several international experts on the subject of ICAO for Space, the final report of which will be presented at the IAASS International Conference on Space Safety in a Global World, to be held in Chicago, USA, May 14-16, 2007.
