MONTREAL -- Veteran guard Julie Hoo of Sudbury, Ont., scored 15 points as Carleton University edged ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ 56-53 in a consolation-round game at the 2008 Concordia-Reebok women’s basketball tournament, Tuesday.

Rookie Kendall MacLeod of Brockville, Ont., chipped in with 10-points and six rebounds for the Ravens, who improved to 5-7 overall.

For the Martlets, Elise Lepine, a freshman from Mission, B.C., tallied a game-high and career-best 16 points before fouling out. The 5-foot-11 forward shot 6-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from three-point range, and made her only foul shot.

Teammates Nathifa Weeks, a senior from Brossard, Que., and freshman Anneth Him-Lazarenko of St. Dorothee, Que., contributed nine points apiece

Both teams got off to a sluggish start and Carleton held a slim 9-8 lead after the opening stanza. The Ravens led 24-21 at the half but ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ rallied to take a 40-39 lead after three quarters.

Carleton, paced by eight rebounds from Tanya Perry of Barrie, Ont., out-rebounded ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ by a 32-20 margin. Caroline Hebert led the Martlets, grabbing five boards.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ shot 39.6 per cent from the floor (19/48), 37.5 from the arc (6/16) and 69.2 from the line (9/13), compared to the Ravens, who shot 41.3, 38.1 and 52.6, respectively.

It marked Carleton’s second win against the Martlets in as many outings this season as the Ravens prevailed 69-38 in a preseason affair at Ottawa last October.

The Martlets went 0-3 at the tourney and have dropped six in a row resulting in a 4-12 record overall. They will resume regular season play when they host UQAM in the first of a home-and-home affair, on Jan. 9. Tip-off is 6 p.m.

TOURNEY TIDBITS -- Alberta won the three-day tourney with a 71-65 conquest over Regina in the final. Memorial finished third after defeating host Concordia 72-64. Alberta’s Anneka Bakker was named tourney MVP, while teammate Emily Bolduc made the all-tournament team. Others all-stars were Krystle Douglas (Concordia), Kelly Himmelman (Memorial) and Rebecca Schmidt (Regina).
