Redmen relegated to 19th at RCGA championships

VICTORIA, B.C. – The ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University golf team failed to make the cut and shot a combined 38-over par score of 322 to finish 19th of 20 teams overall at the Canadian collegiate championships at Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C., Thursday.

UBC's Andrew Robb supplanted Western's Geoff McLeod for the top spot on the individual leaderboard, with the Thunderbirds' low round of 70. Robb improved to four-under, with a two-stroke advantage over teammate Blake Rowe-Sleeman for the lead. McLeod fell to a tie for third at one-under.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ managed par on only one hole and had three birdies on Day 3. They had three bogeys and scored double bogeys (or worse) on 11 holes.

Aidan Brownlie of Springfield, Mass., was ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s top scorer on the round, shooting a seven-over 78. Teammate Sebastien Thibodeau of Laval, Que., shot an 80, followed by Sam Hayes (81) of Aylmer, Que., Kyle Schiissler (83) of Beaconsfield, Que., and Montreal native Samuel Mamane (89).

UBC retained their team standing in first place with a three-over par round of 287. The Victoria Vikes registered a team score of 286 to put them 10-strokes over through 54 holes. Meanwhile, the defending champion Humber Hawks essentially dropped out of the race after totaling 307 to fall back to fifth place.

With the completion of 54 holes, the tournament field was shortened to the low 10 men's teams for the final round. Surviving the cut was, in order of placement, UBC (-7), Victoria (+10), Ottawa (+26), Laval (+29), Humber College (+33), Montreal (+35), Western Ontario (+20), Toronto (+44), Mount Royal College (+48) and Camosun College (+52).

Friday's final round will begin with the first pairings teeing off at 7 a.m.

As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes (four rounds) of play will earn an exemption into the 2008 Canadian men’s amateur championship at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alta., and the 2008 Royale Cup National Women’s Amateur Championship held at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg, Man., respectively.
