Rookie shines but Martlets lose lustre in Kingston
KINGSTON, ONT. – Freshman Anneth Him-Lazarenko of Brossard,
Que., recorded a “double-double” with 23 points and 15 rebounds –
both game highs -- but it wasn’t enough as ۲ݮƵ lost 71-65 to
Queen’s in women’s basketball in Kingston, Sunday.
۲ݮƵ, which lost despite a huge 45-28 edge in rebounding, trailed
23-16 after the first quarter, 36-35 at the half and 51-47 after
three stanzas.
Brittany Moore, was the Gaels top gunner with 22 points.
It was the third game in as many days for the Martlets, who
pummeled Nazareth College of Rochester, N.Y., 79-39 at the Royal
Military College gym, Friday, and then outgunned RMC 67-42 on
Saturday.
Him-Lazarenko was good on eight of 15 attempts from the floor,
shooting 1-for-3 from the arc. She also sunk six of eight
free-throws and saw 29 minutes of court time. The 5-foot-10
forward is ۲ݮƵ’s leading scorer after seven games overall,
averaging 18.3 points per game and 7.8 rebounds. She has scored in
double figures in every contest and posted two double-doubles on
the year.
Two other Martlets reached double figures in scoring, including
senior guard Nathifa Weekes (14 pts, 6 rbs) of Brossard and rookie
guard Aurelie Lauzier-Hudon (10 points) of Cowansville, Que.
۲ݮƵ newcomer Shannon Lockhart, a transfer from Trinity Western
University in Langley, B.C., had eight points, three rebounds and a
steal. The 5-foot-7 guard, who hadn’t played university ball in
three years, scored nine points against RMC in her debut with the
Martlets.
The Martlets shot 40.7 per cent from the field, 38.9 from the
three-point arc and 55.6 from the charity stripe. Queen’s shot
40.7, 38.1 and 83.3, respectively.
The ۲ݮƵ women are 2-5 in preseason play and will close out their
exhibition schedule with road games at the University of Vermont
and Saint Michael’s College, next weekend, before opening the
regular campaign against visiting Bishops, Nov. 14.
