Sure-handed Mansure named volleyball all-star at NIT

TORONTO - The ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ women's volleyball team defeated Toronto 25-16, 22-25, 25-11 and 25-12 at the U of T Athletics Centre, Thursday, to finish with a 3-1 record at the National Invitational Tournament.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ had opened the tourney with a 3-1 win over McMaster on Thursday, then split a doubleheader Friday, losing 3-0 to St. Francis Xavier and beating Brock 3-1.

Against the Varsity Blues, ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ racked up a season-high 16 aces, including five by Kelsey Irwin, a six-foot, middle blocker from Vancouver, B.C., who led the offence with 14 kills to go along with one stuff block and a pair of assisted blocks. Sophomore Emily Kyte of Ottawa contributed 11 kills, two blocks and a 2.47 passing ratio (out of 3.0).

Defensively, the Martlets were paced by sophomore Daphnée-Maude André-Morin of Vaudreuil-sur-le-lac, Que., who had 27 digs and a 2.36 passing ratio.

Marcela Mansure, a 5-foot-7 setter from Brazil, was the only member of the Martlets named to the NIT All-Tournament team. The 23-year-old occupational therapy junior racked up 164 assists over the tourney for an average of 41 per match. She was also credited with 25 digs, six kills, three aces and one stuff block.

Irwin and Kyte led the Martlets in kills with 40 apiece during the tourney, while Genevieve Plante, a freshman from Montreal, had 37 kills.

The Martlets, who sit third in the Quebec conference with an 8-6 record, will resume regular-season play at home to fourth-place Sherbrooke (5-9) on Jan. 14.
