Third International Workshop on Global Internet Governance to be held in Montreal

Published: 26 May 2010

On May 30 and 31, ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will host the Third International Workshop on Global Internet Governance: An Interdisciplinary Research Field in Construction, a workshop that will bring together top experts from around the world to explore and debate the political, economical, social and technical aspects of Internet governance.

Sunday May 30 will be dedicated to outreach sessions aimed at increasing interest in the global Internet governance field among various academic disciplines and civil society at large. A roundtable will explore the contributions from different academic disciplines to global Internet governance research. Open discussions led by experts from prominent Canadian civil society coalitions will follow on contentious topics of current global Internet governance debates, such as network neutrality, intellectual property and copyright, and privacy and surveillance.

Monday May 31 will feature thematic presentations from an international selection of scholars who will share and discuss their work-in-progress in Internet Governance-related research, with the aim to identify emerging research themes and design a research agenda.

Media interested in a more general discussion of these issues are encouraged to attend on Sunday.

The event takes place in conjunction with the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) 2010 Congress week in Montreal, and is organized by the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) in cooperation with The Canadian Communication Association (ACC-CCA), Media@ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, the Computer Sciences Laboratory of Paris 6 (LIP6), and the French University Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC).

"The Internet Governance Workshop in Montreal will bring a provocative new area of research to the attention of academic as well as non-academic audiences in Canada" said Becky Lentz (Media@ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ), chair of the Local Organizing Committee. "After Paris and Brussels, GigaNet is bringing its international workshop to North America, to engage in a dialogue of disciplines, visions and cultures. Beyond building a new research field, we aim at sharing a common understanding of a new polity" added Meryem Marzouki (LIP6/CNRS/UPMC), chair of the Program Committee.
