Vince the Prince leads way as ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ disarms RMC
MONTREAL – Vincent Lambert, a junior left winger from Ste.
Therese, Que., set up three goals and four different Redmen players
scored as ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ doubled Royal Military College 4-2 to kickoff
their men’s hockey Homecoming Weekend at McConnell Arena,
Friday.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak in league play for
the Redmen (1-4-1), including an overtime loss in Trois-Rivières
two days earlier.
Senior Sam Bloom of Toronto opened the scoring at 5:55 for ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ
but RMC evened the count when Michael Soros of Ottawa connected on
a powerplay at 11:23 of the first period.
Lambert, who now has five assists in six games, then set up Eric
L’Italien of Ste. Foy, Que., for a shorthanded effort at 8:10 of
the middle period and also assisted on defenceman Yan Turcotte’s
powerplay goal at 14:17, which proved to be the game-winner.
L’Italien, who has scored in successive games after being kept off
the scoresheet through the first four contests, was shaken up in a
collision late in the middle period and did not return for the
final stanza.
Paul Bradley, a senior from Calgary, replied on a late
second-period powerplay for RMC to narrow ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s lead to
3-2.
Lambert then set up sophomore centre Guillaume Doucet of Montreal
at 1:02 of the last period to complete the scoring.
Rookie netminder Danny Mireault of Notre Dames des Prairies, Que.,
made 23 saves to earn his first official victory (1-3-0) for the
Redmen. Adam Briggs, a senior from Wallace, N.S., made 35 saves but
was saddled with the loss and fell to 2-4-0.
ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, which improved to 44-8-3 lifetime against RMC, outshot the
Paladins 39-25 and had a decided 45-18-2 record in faceoffs. Rookie
Maxime Langelier-Parent of Levy, Que., led the way, posting a
14-3-1 mark on his draws.
The contest featured 74 minutes in penalties, including 46 to the
Redmen. Two ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ players, freshman Francis Verrault-Paul and
veteran Sam Bloom, were ejected in the first and second periods,
respectively, for checking-from-behind minors. Since it was the
first such infraction of the season for both, players, they will
not have to worry about incurring an automatic suspension.
REDMEN RAP: Including RMC Paladins head coach Adam Shell (‘03) and
assistant coach Chad Blundy (’05), more than a dozen ex-Redmen were
spotted in attendance to kick-start the hockey team’s alumni
weekend, which begins in earnest with an old-timer’s game on
Saturday afternoon at 4:30 pm, followed by the annual
Queen’s-ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ affair (), which is slated for 7 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to show up at least a half hour before game
time or purchase tickets in advance at the Redbird Sports Shop,
located inside the Currie Gym at 475 Pine Avenue West.
Other faces in the crowd included former captains Pierre-Antoine
Paquet (‘06) and Dan McLean (’01), who flew in from Chicago, plus
Kyle Hickey (’03) who made the trek from New York City and Shawn
Shewchuk (’08), last year’s team scoring leader, who drove in from
Hamilton, Ont. Also on hand was honorary captain Charlie Lafontaine
(‘52), Joel Bergeron (‘04), David Boucher (‘89), Sebastien Langlois
(’05), plus Redmen assistant coach Stephane Fortin (‘89) and head
coach Martin Raymond (’92).
