While he was still a law student, Dick Pound (BCom’62, BCL’67) competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But that was only the beginning of the Desautels alumnus’ decades-long involvement in the Olympic movement. Pound was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1978, and is now its longest-serving member. He has been the IOC’s Vice-President and the President of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and as he approaches retirement, he credits his success to a no-nonsense approach and an ability to get the job done.

Women in Communications and Technology celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala event that recognized the contributions of leaders who have championed women in Canada’s innovation industries. Among those honoured at the event was Liette Vigneault (EMBA’18), who received the WCT Leader award, which recognizes exceptional contributions to the organization.

When The Producers launched on Broadway in 2001, it took home the Tony Award for Best Musical. Théadora Sauvé’s classmates pushed her to become a better student, and Sauvé’s hard work was be recognized at the Spring 2022 Convocation, where she gave the valedictory address. The Bachelor of Commerce grad is preparing to study law at ۲ݮƵ, but when she came to university, this path was not yet clear. Sauvé initially studied psychology, but switched to Desautels after taking an Organizational Behaviour class taught by Chantal Westgate, a Senior Faculty Lecturer.

Joanne Liu (MDCM'91, IMHL'14, DSc'16) is no stranger to health emergencies. The physician and former International President of Médecins sans Frontières is leading ۲ݮƵ’s efforts to prepare for future health emergencies. As the director of the Pandemic and Health Emergency Readiness Lab, Liu is seeking to develop solutions to current crises and prepare for future ones. There is an acceleration of local epidemics becoming pandemics, and that is somewhat linked to pressure on our environment, Liu told Desautels Prof.

The Canadian Business Hall of Fame honours more than 200 of Canada’s most illustrious business people, and this year, three ۲ݮƵ alumni were added to the list. At a ceremony in Toronto in early May, Power Corporation Chairman Paul Desmarais, Jr. (OC, BCom’77, LLD’12) and Deputy Chair André Desmarais (OC, OQ, LLD’12) were inducted alongside their father Paul Desmarais, Sr. (OC, OQ, LLD’92), who passed away in 2013. Involved in community service since as early as high school, Mariel Langlois (MBA’20) worked in advertising and media for years before enroling in the Desautels’ MBA program to pivot her career as she developed a growing interest in sustainability and social impact.

Now, as an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Consultant at Millani, Mariel advises both corporate issuers and institutional investors on integrating ESG into their strategies.

Abigail Hunter (BCom’16) wants to usher in the clean energy revolution. She represents the Government of Quebec as an attachée in Washington, DC, where she works to help lawmakers understand the benefits of working with Québec – like how its hydroelectricity and energy storage can supplement less predictable solar and wind energy generation. While at Desautels, Hunter learned about impact investing, social enterprise and advancing ethical, social and governance standards. She credits this education with helping her choose a career path.

Marie-Josée Desrochers (EMBA’14) moved to Montréal to study music when she was just sixteen years old, and has spent most of her career working in the arts. Desrochers spent two decades with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and decided to take on a mid-career ۲ݮƵ-HEC Montréal Executive MBA. She credits the experience with helping her evolve as a leader and giving her the confidence to take decisions in times of crisis. Since 2019, she’s been putting those skills to use as the CEO of Société Place des Arts.
