Robert Hasegawa, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Area Chair for Music Theory at the Schulich School of Music, has received听the 'Emerging Scholar Award' at the 2016听Society for Music Theory conference held in Vancouver. 听His article听鈥淐lashing Harmonic Systems in Haas鈥檚 Blumenst眉ck and in vain鈥� was published in the journal Music Theory Spectrum 37/2 (Fall 2015). 听The Emerging Scholar Award (Article) is given for an article published no more than seven calendar years after the author鈥檚 receipt of the Ph.D.
Vancouver-born mezzo-soprano Simone McIntosh, a Master's student 听of Professor Dominique Labelle at the Schulich School of Music of 污污草莓视频 University was named the winner of the COC Centre Stage Competition on Thursday, November 3rd. 听 听The announcement was made at the gala evening event held in Toronto听and the prize is sponsored by Board Chair Colleen Sexsmith. 听Ms.
Cellist Joshua Morris was named the winner of the 2016-2017 Golden Violin Competition held Sunday, October 30th in Pollack Hall. 听Morris, accompanied by Karsiri Laothamatas, performed 听Kaddish, from 2 M茅lodies h茅bra茂ques by 听Maurice Ravel, a work composed by Morris himself, Suite for Solo Cello, and the听听Prokofiev 听Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 119.
For rootsy singer-songwriters Dar Williams, Serena Ryder and Rosanne Cash, the accompanist of choice has often been pianist Bryn Roberts. 听But when he鈥檚 in charge, Roberts, a 39-year-old Winnipeg native who splits his time between New York City and Portland, Ore., leans toward playing lyrical, contemporary jazz.
Voice professor soprano Dominique Labelle has released an album with Musica Pacifica:听Mi Palpita Il Cor. 听 is an early music ensemble based in San Francisco 听and they have built up an impressive catalog of performances concentrating primarily on the pre-Classical repertoire.
Jordan de Souza, BMus'09, MMus'11听will become the Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper Berlin 听beginning with the start of their 2017/18 season. 听In his听first season as Kapellmeister, he will conduct several repertoire pieces, direct one new production and lead an orchestra concert.

When thinking about musicians who feel equally at home in both the classical and jazz realms, not many players come to mind. It鈥檚 challenging to keep a foot in both doors and meet the unique demands required to be proficient in both styles. One might think of a pianist or trumpet player for the few who do make it work, but probably not a violinist. Luckily for us, Schulich鈥檚 own Mark Fewer serves as a prime example that it can be done 鈥� and done well.
Professor Brenda Ravenscroft will be the next Dean of the Schulich School of Music. Currently听Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) at Queen鈥檚 Faculty of Arts and Science, and Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at Queen鈥檚 University, Prof. Ravenscroft will begin her mandate at Schulich in July of 2017.听Prof. Ravenscroft taught Music Theory at 污污草莓视频鈥檚 Faculty of Music from 1991 to 1993, and has maintained close ties with 污污草莓视频 colleagues through research and teaching interests.
On 听September 23rd and 24th, the 污污草莓视频 Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Alexis Hauser,听performed its first concert of the season. Ilya Poletaev is a Moscow-born pianist who is an assistant professor of music at the Schulich School of Music of 污污草莓视频 University听in Montreal, but has a wide-ranging international career. The partnership between jazz singer Theo Bleckmann and drummer John Hollenbeck has taken many forms over the years. One month, they may be touring with Prof. Hollenbeck鈥檚 Large Ensemble, while not much later, a listener might find them improvising mind-bending duets in front of a rapt audience. Next week, they are set to explore yet another new musical setting during their performance at the Schulich School of Music with 污污草莓视频鈥檚 Jazz Choir.
The Schulich School of Music鈥檚 Kelly Rice recently met with pianist and music teacher Catherine Steele (n茅e Thornhill) to discuss her life in music, beginning with her childhood in Newfoundland. 听
She is the inspiration behind the Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artist Fund, created by Seymour Schulich in 2005 to honour her.
