Dept. of Chemistry statement on racism, equity and inclusivity
As we reflect on issues of racism in science and society, #ShutDownAcademia, #ShutDownSTEM, and #Strike4BlackLives, I would like to emphasize that the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Chemistry Department remains committed to the high principles of equality and inclusivity. We are proud of our incredibly diverse population of students, staff, and faculty who came to ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ from 6 continents and over 30 different countries. The individual contributions of each member of our family make ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Chemistry a very special place, both in Canada and worldwide.
We are taking this opportunity to establish a departmental committee that will analyze the current situation with equity and inclusivity, listen to the possible concerns of our members, and coordinate the departmental efforts with the Faculty of Science Committee on Equity and Institutional Climate (SECC). This departmental committee will include participation from the students, staff, and faculty members. It will propose and implement concrete steps towards ensuring a future where “excellence is fostered by bringing together, and fully embracing, individuals and groups of diverse experiences, identities, and ideas.
