The Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences is pleased to announce the nomination of Dr. Gilles Lavigne as a part-time Full Professor in the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences and in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Dr. Lavigne was a Professor in the Faculté de medicine dentaire of Université de Montréal from 1987 until his retirement. He earned his DMD in 1977 from Université de Montréal and a PhD in Trigeminal Neuroscience in 2004 from the University of Toronto. He currently sits on the executive board committee of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Dr. Gilles Lavigne served as Dean of the Faculté de médecine dentaire of Université de Montréal from 2008 to 2016, as Director of the Quebec Pain Research Network from 2017 to 2019, and President of the Dental Sciences Committee of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research from 2003 to 2005. He is recognized internationally for his experimental and clinical research on sleep bruxism and the interactions between sleep, pain, and breathing disorders. In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zurich, and in 2019 he was inducted into the Order of Canada for his work as a dentist and neuroscientist.
Dr. Lavigne's responsibilities at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ will include establishing a research program in sleep apnea and cognitive disease, and teaching and mentorship in our new Oral Medicine program.
