Hello prospective and current Teaching Assistants!ÌýThe following page is a helpful resource for Graduate Students interested in, or currently holding, a Teaching Assistant position in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, in the Faculty of Education.

What is a Teaching Assistant?

A Teaching Assistant (TA) is a graduate student appointed to assist a Course Supervisor with the instruction and evaluation of students in a course. A teaching assistant works under the guidance and supervision of the Course Supervisor who is responsible for setting the course objectives, content and method of instruction as well as final grades and grading practices of the course.

IF YOU ARE A CURRENT EMPLOYEE at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, with an active appointment in Workday who has successfully logged into Workday with an @mcgill.ca account, you must apply as aÌý"Current employee."ÌýYou mustÌýbe signed into VPN using your @mcgill.ca email account prior to logging into Workday in order to be able to apply.Ìý

IF YOU AREÌýNOTÌýA CURRENT EMPLOYEEÌýyou must apply as anÌý“External candidate."ÌýWhen you click on "apply" for a position of interest, you will then be prompted to sign into Workday. At this point, you must create an account with the use of aÌýpersonalÌýemail addressÌýexclusively (i.e. @gmail.com, @yahoo.ca, etc).ÌýDO NOT create an account using your @mail.mcgill.ca addressÌýat this time as this is currently causing a technical issue.

Complete with the Course Instructor and submit to the ECP Administrative Office by the end of the drop/add period.


A mid-term evaluation is also required on the TA WorkloadÌýform. Forms completed at the start of the semester will be redistributed to TAs for mid-term reviews with the Course Lecturers.

Please note that all of the forms above must be completed and signed by the instructor and teaching assistant before submitting.

Please bring the original copy of each form to the front desk ofÌýRoom 614, Education Building. (Due to the current closure of ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ buildings these forms should be emailed).


FAQ

What is the hourly rate for TAs?

Rates of Pay as of:

  • First Sunday of August 2024: $36.25/hour,ÌýFirst Sunday of August 2025: $37.34/hour Ìý-Ìý vacation pay (6%) and statutory holiday compensationÌý(3.6%)Ìýis included

When will I be notified if I am offered a position?

Approximately 35 daysÌýfrom the application deadline.Ìý Please note only selected applicants will be contacted. A notice of offer will be sent to all selected applicants' via their Workday profile.

Can I hold multiple Teaching Assistantships?

Yes. As long as the total combined hours for all TAships does not exceed 180 hours in one semester.ÌýThe Department prefers to offer TAships to as many students as possible each semester. It is rare that one student would hold more than one position during one term.

Will I have to attend the course lectures?

A majority of the positions will require class attendance. If you have been offered a teaching assistantship, please check with the instructor whether this will be a requirement, and if so, please verify that you are available during class hours before accepting a position.
