ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Students Friends of Médecins sans Frontières: Providing Support to an International Humanitarian Organization at the University Level

Abstract

Médecins Sans Frontières was created in 1971 by a group of French doctors and journalists. Since then, this pioneering organization has treated over one hundred million patients worldwide. Today, MSF works in over 60 countries and provides emergency aid with complete independence from political, economic and religious influences. Friends of MSF groups are student societies in various Canadian Universities. Our ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ chapter is an official supporter of MSF. Our goals are to increase awareness for MSF, create fundraising activities, and encourage aspiring humanitarians to consider working with MSF. We achieve our objectives through a wide variety of events and collaborations, including our annual case competition, global health movie screenings, and bake sales, to name a few. In the past, we have volunteered with local community organizations, contributed volunteers to refugee resettlement and MSF Montreal events, and co-hosted the annual global health case comp with our wonderful collaborators at the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Global Health Programs office. ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ honours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
