EXEMPT a student from a course requirement (no credit given)

An exemption can be granted either with or without a mandatory replacement. A transcript is required if the exemption is based on course(s) taken at a university other than ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ.

On the basis of previous course work it is decided that a student should be exempted from a course and SHOULD NOT have to replace it with a specified course.

Example 1: NEUR 630 (basis for exemption:student completed the course during the Masters)
Based on a student’s academic background it is decided that he should be exempted from a course requirement and DOES NOT require a replacement.

Example 2:  NEUR 630 (basis for exemption: student completed the course during the Masters).
Based on a student’s academic background it is decided that he should be exempted from a course requirement but SHOULD replace it with a specified course. In this case, ADD a course requirement would also be filled in.

ADD a course requirement

Used when a student is required to complete an additional course requirement or is permitted to use a course not normally counted towards a degree requirement.

Example:  NEUR 550 (required in order to fulfill exemption requirement)

SUBSTITUTE a regular course requirement with a different ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ course

Used when a student is granted permission to substitute one course with another, whether or not the two courses are equivalent in content.

Example: Regular course number PSYC 713
Substitute course number NEUR 606
(Basis for substitute: students are permitted to take courses outside the unit)

TARGET Re-assign a course to fulfil a specific program requirement

For Degree Evaluation purposes, used to specify the assignment of a course that could be used in one area or another.

Example: EDER 600 to be targeted from the elective area to the complementary area requirement

Note: The Degree Evaluation module reflects substitution/exemption credits and applies them to the student’s program requirements as appropriate. It is beneficial to articulate the substitution/exemption credits as much as possible (e.g. using a valid ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ course subject and number).
