David Cameron’s government will be remembered above all for three things: introducing gay marriage, winning a referendum on keeping Scotland in the United Kingdom, and losing a referendum on keeping Britain in the European Union. What connects these events? How have national and social questions intertwined? How did the Conservative Party become such a curious mixture of reaction and revolution? This talk explores the historical background to Britain’s current existential crisis.
