As our academic year comes to a close, we look back at highlights from the past five months.
Members have been appointed to new leadership roles locally and globally; won prestigious academic awards and funding grants; and published books that will have an impact. Congratulations to each of you.
The Institute also celebrated its first anniversary on June 11. The Institute’s PhD in Health Science Education was approved by Senate on May 13, 2020 and now moves forward to the province for consideration. With special thanks to Peter Nugus and Leah Moss for moving this dossier forward!
APPOINTMENTS
Armand Aalamian was appointed as the Chair of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, Postgraduate Medical Education Committee.
Mylène Dandavino was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics.
Michelle Elizov was appointed Associate Dean, Faculty Development, Faculty of Medicine, effective June 1.
Nicole Gignac was promoted to Administrative Coordinator at the Institute.
Peter Nugus was appointed as Associate Director, Graduate Programs, here at the Institute.
Safiya Simon joined our Institute administrative team on January 27. Safiya previously worked in the Undergraduate Medical Education office in the Faculty of Medicine and is replacing Audrey Lew during her maternity leave.
Ning-Zi Sun is the new program director for the Scholarship in Medical and Health Sciences Education Elective at the Institute.
Aliki Thomas was selected as a member of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists Congress Scientific Programme Committee. Aliki also continues to raise the profile of the Institute at a global level through her work with the Best Evidence Medical Education (BEME) Collaboration.
AWARDS & RECOGNITION
Congratulations to Joanne Alfieri and colleagues Theresa Beesley and Mark Daly for their 2020 Top Quality Improvement Paper, as selected by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as part of International Conference on Residency Education. Their work addressed, Curriculum needs for teaching quality improvement and patient safety to residents.
Congratulations to Ilana Bank and colleagues from the Pediatric Emergency Team, winners of the Surgical Innovation Program for their project , a Pediatric medication bolus assistant. The year-long Innovation Program invites multiple disciplines from three universities (Concordia, École de technologie supérieure, and ۲ݮƵ) to compete for the ability to create a start-up business.
Congratulations to Drs. Ilana Bank, Fraser Moore and Geoffroy Noël, recipients of the 2020 Canadian Association for Medical Education Certificate of Merit which promotes, recognizes and rewards faculty members committed to medical education in Canadian medical schools. .
Congratulations to Miriam Boillat, who won an award of Excellence for Contribution to Family Medicine Education from the Collège québécois des médecins de famille (CQMF) for her passion and dedication in teaching family medicine.
Jason Harley and colleagues received a grant from the ۲ݮƵ University Health Centre (MUHC) Foundation for their project entitled, Emotion regulation and healthcare professionals: Creating research-informed solutions.
Congratulations to Stuart Lubarsky who received the 2020 in the Faculty of Medicine.
Kudos to Sean McWatt, who participated in the 2020 online Canadian Conference on Medical Education’s session, Extending and Augmenting the Educational Experience, the View from the Anatomy Lab.
Congratulations to Lily Nguyen and colleagues, William Bynum, Lara Varpio and Meredith Young, who received a Research Seed Fund for their project entitled, Engaging learning care transition: towards patient‐centred coordination and systems.
Peter Nugus won a salary award - Chercheur-boursier (Junior 2) - from the Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé (FRQ-S) for a research program entitled, Des structures aux individus: comment inciter la coordination des soins au-delà des frontières professionnelles, organisationnelles et systémiques.
Congratulations to Peter Nugus and colleagues Lorraine Bell, Suzanne Macdonald, Diana Ramos, Rocky Chen, Kristin Hunt, Alexandra Cohen and MadisonMeehan, who received a Research Seed Fund for their project entitled, When it all doesn’t go according to plan: A hermeneutic phenomenology study of unmatched CaRMS applicants.
Saleem Razack and colleagues received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight Grant for the project entitled Tackling the nuances of social accountability: Exploring the black box of teaching and learning experiences.
Congratulations to Yvonne Steinert, who was awarded the 2020 MILES Award in recognition of her contributions to Mentoring, Innovation and Leadership in Educational Scholarship at the recent Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference in Singapore.
Congratulations to Aliki Thomas and colleagues, who received two new CIHR grants for the following projects entitled Improving pain education across entry-level physiotherapy programs in Canada: an integrated knowledge translation study and Canadian MSK Rehab Research Network.
