Overview
The IPN Graduate Program Committee has instituted an 'IPNÌýMentorship Program,' by which each graduate student will be matched with a specific member of the Committee. The responsibility of the IPN mentor is to ensure that the student meets the program requirements in a timely manner. The IPN is a large graduate program, such that its student body is vast and its faculty researchers are based in laboratories and research sites across the city. Therefore, we take the necessary initiatives to ensure that all our students feel included, are kept informed, and are focused on meeting their program milestones throughout the course of their degree.Ìý
During the first semester of your first year of studies, you will be assigned an IPNÌýMentor. The assignment is done by the program's Directorship team.
Responsibilities of an IPN Mentor
MSc (/ipn/current-students/msc-program-milestones):
1. initial introductory meeting - a brief meeting of 15- 30 min during which you and your mentee introduce yourselves to one another, and let them know that you are available for them should they encounter any difficulties in their time as a graduate student (see below).
2. chairing the thesis seminar - this is the final meeting where the student presents their data to the committee and a decision is made as to whether the student has enough to write the thesis. Nearly all students pass this seminar, but in the event that the student does not succeed, a make-up seminar will be scheduled which the student is required to pass.
PhD (/ipn/current-students/phd-program-milestones):
1. initial introductory meeting - as above
2. chairing the candidacy exam - The mentor/chair oversees the proceedings, which are organized by the student and supervisor, following IPN guidelines. Students fast-tracking to the PhD from MSc only get one chance to pass the candidacy exam. Those who fail must write a terminal MSc thesis. Students admitted at the PhD level get up to two attempts.
3. attending and voting at the PhD oral defence. This follows ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ GPS regulations and is chaired by the Prodean.
Responsibility of the Student
After being assigned a mentor, it is yourÌýresponsibility to contact your mentor as early as possible to introduce yourself and arrange a meeting. This initial mentor-mentee meeting should take place within 2 weeks of mentor assignment. Please note that in myProgress, the "study plan" is the same thing as the mentorship form and you should upload this to myProgress once it is complete.
