The Max Bell School launched last November. We've been quite busy in the little more than a year since, with numerous public events, appointments, the PODS Summer Program, developing partnerships, and launching our Master of Public Policy Program. Given that so much has happened since our launch, we thought we would put together this recap to make it easier to see everything we have been up to. Enjoy reading, watching and catching up on our activities. There are sure to be many more highlights to come in the year ahead as we move into accepting our first cohort of students in the Fall of 2019.
Launch of the Max Bell School of Public Policy and Panel Discussion
November 2017 | The ۲ݮƵ community came together for the launch of the Max Bell School of Public Policy at the Hotel Omni Mont-Royal. The event was in honour of the Max Bell Foundation’s landmark gift to ۲ݮƵ to establish the new school of public policy. Read more
Jennifer Welsh Jointly Appointed to Max Bell School and Named Canada 150 Research Chair
March 2018 | As Canada 150 Research Chair in Global Governance and Security, Jennifer Welsh will focus on the ۲ݮƵ character and regulation of armed conflict, including the roles of key institutions such as the United Nations, national armed forces, non-state armed groups, and humanitarian organizations. The White House: From Both Sides of the Border
April 2018 | The Max Bell School welcomed a panel of experts to discuss the ۲ݮƵ tide of the Presidency and how it has impacted policy and politics in the United States and Canada. This sold out event featured a lively and informative discussion on: the rise of false news, how Donald Trump compares to past presidents, ۲ݮƵ communications trends in the White House, and policymaking in the Trump age. Max Bell School's New York Launch
April 2018 | From domestic taxation to global security, the Trump administration has consistently highlighted that national interests will be paramount in U.S. policy decisions. But what does this really mean for our day-to-day lives? And what does it mean for our neighbors in the global community? On April 10, 2018, the Max Bell School organized a panel discussion in New York which brought together leading thinkers to discuss the global impact of Trump's "America First" policies. Read more
Garvin Brown & Steffanie Diamond Brown boost public policy at ۲ݮƵ, endowing Chair in Democratic Studies
May 2018 | A $5-million gift from ۲ݮƵians G. Garvin Brown IV, BA’91, and his wife Steffanie Diamond Brown, will make a major contribution to research and teaching at ۲ݮƵ’s Max Bell School of Public Policy by establishing an endowed Chair in Democratic Studies. The Chair will promote further scholarship and public outreach, encourage public discussion of key challenges facing the world’s democracies, and contribute to evidence-based policy decision-making. Bridging Divides in Calgary
ܲԱ2018 | The Max Bell School was in Calgary for an event co-hosted with Canada’s Ecofiscal Commission and the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy. On June 6, 2018, this event brought together policy experts, academics, environmentalists, lawyers, former politicians, and members of the business community to discuss public policies that are good for both the economy and the environment. Celebrating a New Generation of Data-powered Policy Analysts
Summer 2018 | ۲ݮƵ’s Max Bell School of Public Policy co-organized a showcase event with the Centre for Social and Cultural Data Science to mark the end of the Policy & Data Science (PODS) Summer Program that ran from June to August of this year. The celebration brought together students, program organizers, and sponsors as well as participating internship organizations, to mark the success of the program and highlight the real-world policy issues that students tackled over the summer. Mark Lloyd Joins the Max Bell School
September 2018 | Mark Lloyd joins the Max Bell School of Public Policy at ۲ݮƵ University as a Professor of Practice. He was Former Associate General Counsel at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and worked on President Clinton’s transition team at the White House, focusing on the National Council for the Arts and advised the Domestic Policy Office. He will be teaching a Policy Case Study on Information Policy in the Information Age: The Case of the GDPR. Read more
Launch of the MPP Program
September 2018 | Our Master of Public Policy (MPP) opens for applications. The program takes an integrated approach to public policy, striking the right balance between policy theory and practical realities. By providing real-world skills and experience, we prepare students for public policy careers in the government, private and non-profit sectors at the local, national and international levels. October 2018 | The Max Bell School of Public Policy was in London to celebrate its recent launch and the unveiling of its flagship teaching program – a one-year Master of Public Policy (MPP) – which is now accepting admissions for the 2019-2020 academic year. Committed to leading the conversation on the world’s most pressing policy issues, the Max Bell School marked the occasion and visit to the UK by hosting a panel discussion at Canada House. Read more

November 2018 | The Max Bell School of Public Policy welcomed Carolyn A. Wilkins, Senior Deputy Governor at the Bank of Canada, for a luncheon at the Faculty Club at ۲ݮƵ University.
