Black History Month at ۲ݮƵ and Resources for Healing Forward

Black History Month at ۲ݮƵ is an annual celebration co-organized by theOffice of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), theand the.The theme for this year's 5th annual celebration of Black History Month at ۲ݮƵ is:Healing Forward.Shanice Yardeis theSenior Advisor,Anti-Racism and Equity Education,anda key organizer of the Black History Month activities. Sheshared withtheMHW newsletter editorial teamthatin many ways, thisyear’s themeis an invitation to imagine what our future can look like with healing at thecentre.

Events thus farhave brought togetherover 600 ۲ݮƵ students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community membershighlightingtopics such as:

  • Black Health, Racism & the Pursuit of Wellbeing presented by Dr.OnyeNnorom.

  • Hidden Histories, a teach-in on local Black history featuringand ۲ݮƵ alumna.

  • Black Mental Health Matters,an eventheld in collaboration with the Social Accountability and Community Engagement Office (SACE) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Scienceswhichincluded speakers such as:

  • Maureen Owino,who discussed the history of racism in Canada,transgenerational trauma, and the way in which anti-Black racism impacts mental health.

  • KhanBouba-Dalambaye, counsellor and consultant at ۲ݮƵ, Melissa Cobbler, a mental health clinician and Local Wellness Advisorinthe۲ݮƵStudent Wellness Hub, and AishahSeivwrightofwho participated ina panel discussion.

As Black History Monthdrawsto a close,let ustake the learningsfromall of the activities,and from event coordinatorShaniceYarde,whosays“to both heal and move forward, we need to have an understanding of and reckoning with the history that shaped our past and continues to inform our present”.
