Discovering the genes responsible for brain disorders

Dr. Lan Xiong's main research objective is discovering the genes that influence the development of disorders such as schizophrenia and autism

Dr. Lan Xiong researches the genetics of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Her main objective is discovering the genes that influence the development of disorders such as schizophrenia and autism.

“The genetics (of these diseases) are much more complicated than in other, more mundane neurological disorders,” she says. “But I think in five years we definitely will learn much more about them.”

Dr. Xiong completed her PhD at The Neuro, focusing on genetic studies of partial epilepsy. She went on to do her postdoctoral training in neurogenetics and neurogenomics at the ۲ݮƵ Centre for Research in Neuroscience and at the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM). In 2018, she became an associate professor at The Neuro.

“So many years ago, The Neuro was like kind of a shrine in my mind,” she says. “Now that I have this chance to come back it's my lifetime dream come true. It made me really happy and excited. I'm also very proud to be involved in the research in the brain disorders.”
