Experts: Hydro-Québec unveils $3B wind farm project in Lower St. Lawrence 

Hydro-Québec and L'Alliance de l'énergie de l'Est are partnering to develop a new wind farm in the Lower St. Lawrence region, aiming to generate up to 1,000 megawatts of power. This $3 billion project, announced on Wednesday, will span 700 square kilometres of public land, including parts of Kamouraska and Témiscouata.

Experts: 2024 state of the climate report 

A new report by some of the world’s top climate scientists examines key indicators and finds that the world is “on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster.” The authors found that 25 out of 35 indicators used to track the planet's climate risk, from ocean temperatures to tree-cover loss, are at record levels.

Expert: Quebec launches fall vaccination campaign

Quebec began rolling out its fall vaccination campaign against respiratory viruses on Monday, starting with vulnerable populations. Along with flu shots, a new COVID-19 vaccine adapted to the latest variants is available. This year, Quebec is among the first provinces to offer free RSV vaccines to infants, aiming to reduce the strain on hospitals.

Experts: World Alzheimer Report 2024

A new edition of World Alzheimer Report, to be published Sept. 20, 2024, will take a deep dive into how perceptions of dementia have changed over the past five years. It builds on a 2019 report that found one in four people believed nothing could be done to prevent dementia, while evidence suggests 40 per cent of cases could be delayed or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors.

Expert: A jump in whooping cough cases

“Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Canada, with some provinces reporting sharp increases compared to pre-pandemic averages. More than 11,670 cases have been reported in Quebec so far this year, a significant jump from the annual average of 562 cases between 2015 and 2019.” (CBC News)

Expert: Canada’s first-ever national oral health survey

Preliminary results of the Canadian Oral Health Survey (COHS), released August 27, highlight disparities in insurance coverage and indicate dental visits have almost returned to pre-pandemic levels. Residents of Quebec were the least likely to have dental insurance, while Albertans were the most likely. The COHS is Canada’s first-ever national oral health survey.

Experts: Canada’s two major railways resume service as railroaders return to work

Trains began to trundle along the tracks of Canada’s two major railways on Monday after the federal labour board ended a four-day work stoppage that snarled supply chains and upended commutes. Amid a bitter labour dispute, the Canada Industrial Relations Board on Saturday ordered Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. to resume operations and 9,300 workers to return to their posts at 12:01 a.m. ahead of binding arbitration set to begin this week.
