Please 'Bem Vinda' (Welcome) Visiting Scholar Dr. Gisele Martins

Dr. Martins, RN, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing, University of Brasilia (UnB) in Brazil, and she will spend her sabbatical year at the Ingram School of Nursing and the Shriners Hospital for Children®– Canada. She will be conducting a series of studies in collaboration with Dr. Argerie Tsimicalis and her colleagues. Projects will include understanding the elimination habits and continence issues in children with osteogenesis imperfecta and other childhood conditions, and developing an app to optimize the assessment of continence issues among children.

Dr. Martins is also the Founder of an Advanced Practice Nursing Clinic in Paediatric Urology at the University Hospital of Brasilia (UHB), affiliated with UnB. Dr. Martins’ interests lie in understanding the determinants and processes of continence acquisition and enhancing the identification, intervention and prevention of continence issues among children. Her research contributes to the development and evaluation of tailored continence programs for children and their families.

Dr. Martins is no stranger to Canadian cold. She completed her PhD sandwich program from the University of Alberta in 2008 (Supervisor: Dr. Katherine N. Moore), and her postdoctoral fellowship in 2014 at the Hospital for Sick Children in the Department of Urology (Mentor: Dr. Walid Farhat). She returns with her winter clothes in tow in order to complete her third research training. 

As a lifelong learner and professor who is committed to public service and working with members of diverse populations, Dr. Martins looks forward to serving the University of Brasilia community equipped with more skills and qualifications. Upon completion of the sabbatical year, Dr. Martins hopes to return to Brazil having established fruitful research partnerships, and the tools to improve the delivery of public healthcare to children with chronic conditions in Brazil.
