Abstract: Social construction is often treated as an alternative to the reductive explanations that characterise biomedical psychiatry. But there must be some mechanisms by which social forces act on behaviour. Most theories seem to assume that standard psychological theories can describe the mechanisms. I will ask what difference it makes if we try to integrate models of abnormal psychology into a constructionist framework.
