The McIntyre Medical Sciences Building was constructed in 1965 by the firm of Marshall and Merrett.Ìý
It is situated just north of theÌýStewart Biological Sciences BuildingÌýin McIntyre Park, once the site ofÌýDuncan McIntyre's Square Mile mansion, Craguie. This circular, concrete, sixteen-storey tower has two entrances, one on Drummond Street which leads to the ground floor, and another on Pine Avenue which opens onto the sixth floor. The two main lecture theatres are positioned near the sixth floor entrance to reduce traffic in between classes. The fourteenth to sixteenth floors serve the animal research facility, the seventh to thirteenth floors contain research labs and offices, and the lower floors are dedicated to classrooms, offices, the library, a cafeteria, and public areas.Project Description:
Renovations to labs 1138 to 1143 (research on tuberculosis), which includes the demolition of a wall, new services, new finishes, new lab counters, a freezer farm, and ventilation upgrade.
Project Scope:
Renovation and remodeling of an existing tissue culture suite for tuberculosis related research in the McIntyre Medical building for the Faculty of Medicine. The existing spaces have reached the end of their usable life, and need to be BSL2. Renovations include demolition of walls, new services, new finishes, new lab counters, a freezer farm and ventilation. Existing ventilation is not adequate and was not updated during ventilation upgrade. For this reason, it is understood that the ventilation portion of the project will be covered by deferred maintenance. Rooms included are labs 1138, 1139, 1140, 1141, 1142, 1142A, and 1143 on the 11th floor.
