Dear members of the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ community,Ìý
As the first phase of the investigative work on the site of the New Vic Project comes to a close, I want to provide an important update on the findings.Ìý
In recent weeks, experts have been carrying out archeological work in full accordance with the recommendations of an independent panel of archeologists to determine whether unmarked graves were on the site of the former Royal Victoria Hospital.Ìý
This work was also carried out in full compliance with the settlement agreement reached in April between ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University, theÌýSociété québécoise des infrastructures, the Kanien’keha:ka Kahnistensera, also known as the Mohawk Mothers, and several other parties.Ìý
Archaeological excavation has now been carried out in an area of the site identified by the Historic Human Remains Detection Dogs as potentially containing human remains, and in nine other areas identified by ground-penetrating radar (GPR) that could potentially contain unmarked graves.Ìý
All this work was done in the presence of cultural monitors appointed by the Mohawk Mothers and led by archeologists possessing the expertise recommended by the panel of experts.Ìý
The initial stage of archeological excavation work is complete.Ìý
I can now confirm that this stage of the work has not produced any evidence of human remains or unmarked graves. The Mohawk Mothers are immediately informed of findings and developments in the archeological work. Ìý
Now that this initial stage is complete, we must proceed with further archeological techniques at the site according to the recommendations of the independent panel of experts. We remain committed to seeing through this process to its full conclusion in accordance with our obligations under the settlement agreement.Ìý
As we move forward, ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ is also committed to sustaining and deepening conversations about the New Vic project with elected and hereditary leaders from local Mohawk communities in the weeks, months, and years to come.Ìý
I encourage members of the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ community who would like more information and updates toÌýconsult this FAQ page, which includes the settlement agreement signed with the Mohawk Mothers and more details on the processes that were followed to conduct the investigation.Ìý
