A ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ tribute to a "Grand Dame of Science"

It is with much sadness that I communicate to the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ neuroscience community the news of the death of Rita Levi-Montalcini on December 31, 2012. She was the discoverer of the first trophic protein in the nervous system, Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). For this seminal discovery she was given the 1986 Nobel Prize in Medicine. The discovery of NGF opened a new era in Neuroscience research.

Launch of the Research Administration Network

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ and Tsinghua University explore new collaborations

On November 16, Prof. Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University, visited Tsinghua University, a leading Chinese institution of higher learning. She met with her counterpart President Chen Jining, and they discussed how they might strengthen ties between the two universities in the coming years.

During the talks, a number of areas of mutual interest emerged.

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum recently met with senior leadership at the Chinese Ministry of Education and China Scholarship Council, during her visit to Beijing on November 15 and 16.

Building bridges with Quebec-based companies in China

During ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum’s recent visit to Beijing, she met with the leadership of Quebec-based companies in China at a luncheon hosted by the Canada-China Business Council (CCBC).

At the event, Prof. Munroe-Blum heard about the challenges and opportunities for Canadian companies doing business in China.

An important point of discussion among the group focused on talent development and mobility.

Two ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ proposals advance in CERC competition

On November 8, the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), announced the proposals from eight Canadian universities that have been selected to recruit 11 prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERCs). This latest CERC competition will further enable Canada to be at the leading edge of research breakthroughs, which will generate significant social and economic benefits for Canadians.
