TSI Public Talk: Harnessing the Power of Interstellar Plasma Lenses
Join us Thursday, November 16th to learn about how TSI astronomer Dr. Robert Main uses plasma in our galaxy as a telescope!
Over 55 years ago, two radio telescopes across Canada were combined to achieve the resolution of a telescope 3000 km across, a technique coined as Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Interstellar plasma lenses bend radio light, and if mapped out using VLBI, can be used themselves as cosmic telescopes billions of kilometers across to study astronomical sources with incredible precision. In this talk, Robert will describe the historical and present developments which make this technique reality, as well as recent breakthroughs.
