Dr. Charles Larson appointed Interim Director, Global Health Programs

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Charles Larson to the position of Interim Director, Global Health Programs (GHP), School of Population and Global Health (SPGH), Faculty of Medicine, ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University. Dr. Larson succeeds Dr. Madhukar Pai, effective July 1, 2020.

We would like to send a warm and heartfelt thank you to Dr. Pai for re-establishing global health programming at the University with infectious energy and a drive towards inclusiveness.

Dr. Larson completed his medical degree and subsequent specializations in Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine & Public Health at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University. Spanning more than 30 years, Dr. Larson’s academic career has primarily focused on capacity building and implementation research to support the scaling up of life-saving interventions for children under the age of five.

From 1989 to 1992 Dr. Larson directed the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ-Ethiopia Strengthening Community Health Project, before returning to Canada where he directed the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Global Health Office within the Faculty of Medicine and led a five-year ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Population and Child Health project in Chelyabinsk, Russia. In 2002, Dr. Larson moved to Bangladesh where, on secondment from ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, he directed the Health Systems and Infectious Diseases Division at the International Centre for Diarrheal Diseases Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). In 2008, he joined the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia as Professor and Director of BC Children’s Hospital Centre for International Child Health.

In 2015, Dr. Larson returned to Montreal and assumed his current position as National Coordinator of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR). In addition, Dr. Larson has served as a Senior Advisor to ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Global Health Programs, playing an integral role in expanding the scope of global health training offered to ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ students.

In his role as Interim Director, Dr. Larson will be accountable for the oversight of all activities under the umbrella of ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Global Health Programs as well as overseeing the strategic vision in the creation of a new division under the SPGH. He will be responsible for the overall vision and mission of GHP, including the continued excellence and growth of the current programs, establishing new initiatives related to global health engagement, academic and educational offerings as well as global health research campus wide. In this role, Dr. Larson will report directly to the Inaugural Director and Associate Dean, School of Population and Global Health, Dr. Timothy Evans.
