Project Title: Politics, Caste and the Village: Making of a Region in North India
Geographic Focus: Haryana, India
Project Description:
My doctoral research examines the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ contours of rural life in Haryana, India whose inhabitants are profoundly dependent on agriculture, its produce and the labor opportunities it provides. Based on over eighteen months of fieldwork in north India, I investigate how the region got historically constituted via the territorial spread of relation of caste, kinship, and agriculture. I analyze both the historical and contemporary workings of these relations in conditions created by colonial and postcolonial governmentality. In doing so, my dissertation also gives an account of social and techno-infrastructural change in rural India.Â
