Nursing Awards of Excellence

MUHC director of nursing Alain Biron, Josée Lizotte & Marie-Josée Bourassa
Every year, Nurses Week is an opportunity to promote and recognize our profession and... our shared values! It was the perfect opportunity for the MUHC Nursing Awards of Excellence to integrate the values and foundations of SBNH into the nomination forms," says Josée Lizotte, nursing practice consultant and co-chair of the Nursing Week Committee with Marie-Josée Bourassa. She revised the 12 award categories, highlighting SBNH and ensuring epicene writing throughout the whole process, from nominations to the official ceremony unveiling the nominees and recipients..

It all happened quite naturally," she says, "as the nominators stepped forward and gave examples of how nurses are guided by the values of SBNH. I read with great pleasure, pride and admiration the nominations of my colleagues, who are often SBNH role models without even knowing it!

Family nursing sessions at a respiratory ambulatory clinic

Josée Lizotte and Marie Létourneau
Marie Létourneau is an advanced practice nurse at the MUHC. She wanted to increase nurse’s awareness of SBNH values that guide their interactions with patients and families by reflecting on memories triggered by story sharing and she did it with great success! She developed, tested and implemented several pedagogical tools for the interactive sessions she animated:

  • A workbook: including SBNH values definitions, a list of needs and emotions and a personal self-reflection activity sheet.
  • A multi-purpose video of a simulated clinical interaction between a nurse and a patient permitted numerous analysis

Over the course of 11 virtual 60 min sessions, she found ways to invite an initiate the nurses to do:

  • Storytelling and story sharing
  • Reflecting back and Reflecting forward
  • Linking and Labeling
  • Spiraling process

This program could be implemented in other clinical areas. It is inspiring to hear about this successful story!

Nursing Awards for Nurse’s Week

Left to right: Fabienne Germeil, Maya Jeanty, Joséphine Lemy Dantica, Xiaojing Sun
Nurse’s Week at the Montréal West Island Integrated CIUSSS has always been an opportunity to recognize the unique strengths of our nurses. This year, the Professional Development and Nursing Practice team of the Directorate of Nursing requested and obtained approval from the SBNH Advisory to use the SBNH logo in our Nursing Awards, which is inspired by the SBNH philosophy. Our award contains 6 categories of excellence for which managers are asked to nominate nurses or licensed practical nurses by submitting an explanation of how the nominee exemplifies one or more of the SBNH qualities (e.g., humility, self-awareness, authenticity, open-mindedness, compassion, courage, credibility, and others). The submissions were then anonymized, and voted upon by a selection committee, which included at least three SBNH champions or mentors in addition to our representative member of the SBNH Clinical Partnership Group, John William Kayser, Senior Nursing Advisor. On the day of the awards, we presented the submitted examples of unique strengths of the 6 winners out of the 27 nominees. Below we present a picture Maya Jeanty, Department Manager of Community Oncology Medicine St-Mary's & Oncology Clinic Lakeshore General Hospital, who won the Leadership Management Award.

Among our four ePosters and one presentation that we co-authored, we were delighted to have had an ePoster viewing of our SBNH inspired Professional Integration Program for Internationally-Educated Nurses, created by one of our SBNH champions, Manon Bordeleau, Coordinator of Professional Practice Development. Accenting on the SBNH value of uniqueness, this program strives to personalize and humanize the education and clinical support of Internationally-Educated Nurses in their development to become candidates to the nursing profession at the end of the program. For this program, John William Kayser, Senior Nursing Advisor, is the project manager and Marissa Fontaine, Nursing Advisor, is the lead for clinical support and training.

Nursing Virtual Forum

In February 2023 SBNH was the sole topic of the quarterly Nursing Virtual Forum held by the Directorate of Nursing. The audience ranges from new nurses to very senior nurses, from Licensed Practical Nurses to the Director of Nursing. To appeal to this broad audience, we had a variety of SBNH champions come in and tell their stories of SBNH ranging from how they implement in their unit, using SBNH to combat pandemic fatigue, feelings of anxiety or exhaustion, or how SBNH has helped in their work as a nurse. The event was well received and showed how SBNH works for clinicians, educators and leaders.

Nurses Week 2023:

For Nurses week 2023 we held 3 events during the day.

Certificates of recognition

This year we created certificates of recognition for nurses practicing with SBNH qualities.

Nurses’ Stories: Compassionate Caring Guided by SBNH – A travelling physical exhibit

The Nurses' Stories exhibit set up in the lobby of the Jewish General Hospital
For nurse’s week in 2022, we created a virtual exhibit/website that highlighted nurses’ stories from the pandemic. For Nurse’s week 2023, we used those stories to create a travelling physical exhibit of 12 large banners. Four (4) of the banners introduce SBNH values and foundations as well as describing the value of the story sharing process. The remaining eight (8) banners are each a story we collected. This self-guided physical exhibit takes the learner through a reflective experience, with each story relating to one of the SBNH values allowing the participant to listen to the original story through a QR code that links to our website. By reflecting on the SBNH values through a story, the exhibit offers an invaluable tool to broaden and deepen one’s understanding of SBNH and to integrate SBNH as one’s approach to practice, transforming even the most challenging situations into rewarding learning and growth experiences. Nurses may also feel stronger connectedness and belonging among their team members who participated in the activity. These banners were on display for the entire day for all staff and visitors to view. There are now future plansÌýfor the banners to be travelling on various units across our CIUSSS.

Launch of Share Point page

The Share Point page for CIUSSS-West Central
When we interviewed our SBNH champions and leaders that asked them what they wanted and needed to keep up the SBNH momentum, they requested a newsletter. We listened to them and designed a user-friendly Share Point page for our CIUSSS. This page is now a valuable resource where any nurse can see all our SBNH champions, have access to tools that have been created and projects that have been done within our CIUSSS. We have included direct links on this page to the SBNH International Headquarters website as well as to our Nursing Stories website. Nurses can easily request information or training for their different units or institutions within our CIUSSS. The share point page provides highlights of what is coming up and other events that have taken place with captivating photos!
