Dr Wurzba DDS, MSc, PhD is an associate professor at the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University and a principal investigator at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research - Segal Cancer Center. She obtained her DDS from the University of Sao Paulo State, Brazil and her MSc and PhD in Pathology and Molecular Biology from the University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Brazil). Following her doctoral studies, Dr. Wurzba completed a postdoctoral training in Genetic/Genomics in Oncology at the Ludwig Cancer Institute under the mentorship of Dr Luiz Paulo Kowalski, a leading expert at AC Camargo Cancer Center. She gained extensive experience in oncology, which she expanded upon trough a complementary postdoctoral training in Experimental Medicine at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University, focusing on tumor progression mechanisms and developing orthotopic metastatic models using patient-derived tissues.
Currently, Dr. Wurzba leads innovative basic and translational research aimed to improve prevention, early tumor detection, and discover alternative therapeutic approaches for patients with advanced cancer. Dr. Wurzba's work centers on the intricate relationship between infections, particularly human papillomavirus (HPV), and the tumor microenvironment. She investigates the key molecular pathways that drive tumor progression and therapeutic resistance, utilizing cutting-edge molecular techniques and diagnostic tools to tackle critical challenges in oncology. Her ultimate aim is to enhance early detection methods, refine staging criteria, and develop personalized, targeted interventions for aggressive cancers, paving the way for improved patient outcomes.
Dr Wurzba’s research has been published in several peer-reviewed biomedical and medical international journals and she has contributed to book chapters related to the field of oncology science. She has been presented at national and international conferences, including the American Association Head and Neck Society, the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology, and the International Academy of Oral Oncology. She also has been serving on several national and international grant panels, editorial boards of biomedical/medical journals, selection and evaluation committees,.
