Rank Description
Assistant Professor (Special Category) An academic staff member appointed to a pre-tenure-track position for a non-renewable definite term of one year. On the fulfillment of the condition(s) specified in the letter of appointment, will be appointed as a tenure-track Assistant Professor.
Assistant Professor An academic staff member appointed to a definite term (3-year) tenure-track position.

Associate Professor

An academic staff member appointed:

  1. upon the granting of tenure (from a tenure-track Assistant Professor position); or
  2. to a definite term tenure-track appointment; or
  3. to a new appointment with tenure

Full Professor

An academic staff member appointed upon the recommendation of either a Statutory Selection Committee or the University Tenure Committee for Recruitment (UTCR):

  1. promotion from Associate Professor, or
  2. a definite term tenure-track appointment of maximum duration (five years); or
  3. new appointment with tenure

Designation that may be applied to a Full Professor appointment

Emeritus

Honorific that is accorded to all retired Full Professors and Librarians who, prior to their retirement from the University have held the rank for a minimum of five years and are deemed to have satisfactorily maintained the standard for which they were appointed to that rank.
