The School of Continuing Studies has launched several of its online programs through grants and initiatives that were originally created out of the need for building capacity in Indigenous communities. The Certificate in Indigenous Business Management and the Certificate in Information Systems (which later became the Certificate in Computers and Information Technology) were both launched in 2015 when Dr. Sicilia received a grant of $1.2M in from the Federal Government in partnership with two Cree First Nations in Chisasibi and Waswanipi, in the James Bay Territory. Having developed these programs keeping Indigenous adult learners in mind, we recommend these programs for their accessibility to remote communities and their collaborative development with our partners.

In-CommunityÌýCertificate in STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The skills and knowledge gained through STEM education are no longer optional but critical for future jobs. People working in STEM occupations — engineers, doctors, dentists, nurses, and scientists, etc. — have political, social, and economic influence. They can play strong leadership and decision-making roles in Indigenous communities, workplaces, and governments.

This program is offered to Indigenous organizations and communities in partnership with the School of Continuing Studies’ Indigenous Relations Initiative.
