Criteria for Successful Completion of the Dent-P Year

For successful completion of the Dent-P Year, the student must have:

  • Minimum of 30 credits over two semesters (Fall, Winter), where at least 27 of those credits are graded;
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.50 (on 4.00);
  • Minimum grade of B in each of the four required courses of BIOL 200 (Molecular Biology), BIOL 201 (Cell Biology & Metabolism), PHGY 209 (Mammalian Physiology 1) and PHGY 210 (Mammalian Physiology 2);
  • Minimum grade of B in each of the two complementary sciences (tracks);
  • Passing grades for the remaining complementary and elective courses.

Students who fulfill all of the criteria BUT have ONE course grade below B (in a required or complementary science course)

shall have their candidacies assessed by the Student Promotions Committee. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Admission into year 1 of the D.M.D. program for the subsequent year;
  • Granting a one-year extension of the Dentistry Preparatory Qualifying Year (DENT-P Year), within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second DENT-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Student Promotions Committee for potential admission into year 1 of the D.M.D. program.

Students whose CGPA is between 3.35 and 3.49 and who have no mark below B

shall have their candidacies assessed by the Student Promotions Committee. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Admission into year 1 of the D.M.D. program for the subsequent year;
  • Granting a one-year extension of the Dentistry Preparatory Qualifying Year (DENT-P Year), within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second DENT-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Student Promotions Committee for potential admission into year 1 of the D.M.D. program;
  • Candidacy for admission into the D.M.D. program is not retained, in which case the student may be eligible to continue in their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students with a CGPA between 3.35 and 3.49 with at least one course with a mark below B

shall have their candidacies assessed by the Student Promotions Committee.Ìý Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Granting a one-year extension of the Dentistry Preparatory Qualifying Year (DENT-P Year), within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second DENT-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Student Promotions Committee for potential admission into year 1 of the D.M.D. program;
  • Candidacy for admission into the D.M.D. program is not retained, in which case the student may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students with a CGPA between 3.20 and 3.34 AND with all credits passed without condition

(i.e. minimum grade of C or S) shall have their candidacies assessed by the Student Promotions Committee. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Granting a one-year extension of the Dentistry Preparatory Qualifying Year (DENT-P Year), within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second DENT-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Student Promotions Committee for potential admission into year 1 of the D.M.D. program;
  • Candidacy for admission into the D.M.D. program is not retained, in which case the student may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students with a CGPA of 3.19 and below

shall not be eligible for admission to the D.M.D. program in the subsequent year and shall not be eligible for an extension of DENT-P Year. Such students may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students who have not successfully passed all credits

shall not be eligible for admission to the D.M.D. program in the subsequent year and shall not be eligible for an extension of DENT-P Year. Such students may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Student Promotions Committee

Students who do not meet any of the DENT-P Year criteria for any reason not contemplated by this policy shall be assessed by the Student Promotions Committee where possible outcomes include (but are not limited to) any of those mentioned above.
Where a student’s file is considered by the Student Promotions Committee, students shall be notified in writing and invited to provide the Committee with a letter of explanation and any relevant and official supporting documents.
