Website launched for ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages

ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ's Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE) has launched an interactive website for the upcoming events around the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Symposium on the University's Role in Supporting Indigenous Languages, to be held May 10th and 11th at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ and Kahnawà:ke. .

The symposium's goal is to examine the role of the university in Indigenous language maintenance and revitalization. An Open Forum will take place Thursday, May 10th in the Education building, and a Community Forum will take place Friday, May 11th at Kahnawà:ke.

The symposium is organized with the support of the Kanien’keháka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Centre, The Faculty of Education, The Department of Linguistics and ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ's Faculty of Arts, the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Indigenous Studies Program, and ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ's Institute for the Study of International Development, and OFNIE. The purpose of this Symposium is to:

  • signal ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ’s commitment to Indigenous languages in this province and 
  • examine more closely what role the University should play in supporting the health of Indigenous languages, locally and regionally.

Special invitees include Indigenous language teachers, scholars, and university program directors from across Canada.
