Resident Amir Besharati wins 2023 Excelsior Prize from the Fédération des médecins résidents du Québec

Dr. Amir Besharati, a resident at ۲ݮƵ’s GMF Jardins-Rousillon, Department of Family Medicine, has won the 2023 Excelsior Prize in Family Medicine from the Fédération des médecins residents du Québec for his healthcare project to Persian-speaking communities in Canada. During his residency, Dr. Besharati developed an interactive “Kind Doctors” project, recruiting almost 40 volunteer physicians with the aim of educating and sensitizing Persian-speaking communities (Afghan, Tajik and Iranian) about preventive medicine and the health care system in Canada.

About Dr. Besharati

Dr. Amir Besharati’s work has always involved community, health promotion and education, with a focus on preventive care for vulnerable populations including transgender women, immigrants and refugees. Originally from the Middle East (Israel and Iran), Dr. Amir Besharati practiced as a family physician and pediatrician in his native country.

He then completed two fellowships, in pediatric pneumology and allergology, in France. In search of a better future, especially for his little daughter Haileya, he later moved to Quebec in 2014, and worked in the health system (Direction régionale de santé publique - DRSP - of Montréal) while studying a master's degree at Université de Montréal in Experimental Medicine and Externat at Université de Sherbrooke. Today he is a resident at ۲ݮƵ’s GMF Jardins-Rousillon, Department of Family Medicine.

In 2015, alongside his humanitarian activities, he founded an NGO (MIQ-PAK) to help doctors outside of Canada integrate into the Canadian health system and has produced a multitude of content including videos and podcasts via social media. He won the "Person of the Year 2021" award from Journal Hafteh, a Canadian media outlet for the Farso-speaking community, for his involvement helping the Farsiphone and Persian communities. He is the writer, editor, and translator of 13 medical books and has participated in the publication of 7 scientific articles.
