Philip H. Gordon Visiting Professor

The Philip H. Gordon Visiting Professor lecture was established to recognize Dr. Gordon's life-long devotion and contributions to Colorectal Surgery at the Jewish General Hospital, ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ University and the community at large.

Dr. Gordon graduated from the University of Saskatchewan Faculty of Medicine in 1966. He trained in General Surgery at the Jewish General Hospital and became the first fellow in Colorectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota under Dr. Stanley Goldberg in 1973. He became an honorary assistant in surgery at St Mark’s Hospital in London in 1974 where he co-authored the landmark paper on anal stulas with the Late Sir Allan Parks. He subsequently returned to the Jewish General Hospital where he began his career in Colorectal Surgery.

Dr. Gordon was instrumental in beginning colorectal surgery at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ and in Canada. He was the founding President of the Canadian Society of Colorectal Surgeons from 1982-1986. He was the only Canadian to have served as President of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons in 1994. He co-authored several textbooks on Colorectal Surgery, which have served as references in the eld. He has served on numerous editorial boards of prestigious peer-reviewed journals, and has co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. He has become an honorary member of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Coloproctology as well as of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. He was named to the Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence in recognition of contributions to teaching in the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Faculty of Medicine in 2007.
