Geriatric Medicine in Family Medicine

The Jewish General Hospital and St. Mary's hospital care for the elderly training in Family Medicine. Residents spend one month during the two year training program with the Division. During that time, the resident acquires skills in the global assessment of the health care needs of the elderly. Issues specific to the care for the elderly are emphasized, including functional assessment of the elderly, cognitive decline (dementia and delirium), health care delivery to the elderly, community resources, management of urinary incontinence, falls, pharmacology and health care maintenance and prevention. The resident works in a multidisciplinary setting with nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers. Teaching is accomplished through lectures and direct patient care.

At the Jewish General Hospital, inpatient and emergency room consults, outpatient geriatric assessment clinics, the specialized memory clinic and home visits are part of the rotation.
