Yvonne Steinert

Professor Yvonne Steinert HeadshotYVONNE STEINERT, PhD, CM, is a clinical psychologist, Professor of Family Medicine and Health Sciences Education, and the Richard and Sylvia Cruess Chair in Medical Education. She previously held a number of leadership positions at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ, including founding Director of the Institute of Health Sciences Education and Director of the Centre for Medical Education (2005-2020), founding Associate Dean of Faculty Development in the Faculty of Medicine (1993-2011), and Director of Faculty Development (1984-2004) and International Projects (1998-2006) in the Department of Family Medicine. She has also held a number of leadership positions nationally and internationally, including president of the Canadian Association for Medical Education, inaugural chair of the AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe) International Faculty Development Committee, and member of the International Board of the BEME (Best Evidence in Medical Education) Collaboration.

Dr. Steinert is actively involved in course design and delivery at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, faculty development for all health professionals, teaching and supervision of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows interested in Health Sciences Education, and educational research. Her educational and research interests focus on teaching and learning in the health professions, the continuing professional development of faculty members and the impact of faculty development on the individual and the organization, professionalism and professional identity formation among students and faculty members, and the interplay between culture and health professions education. She has published widely on faculty development and medical education and is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences and universities. She has also received a number of awards acknowledging her educational and research accomplishments, and she was named to the Order of Canada in 2018 in recognition of her contributions to the advancement of pedagogical principles, faculty development, and new training approaches in medical education.


Current Research Interests: Faculty development and the continuing professional development of faculty members; teaching and learning in the health professions; professionalism and professional identity formation; culture and health professions education; work-based learning and communities of practice; and leadership and change management.
