Stéphanie Bélanger-Naud, meilleure bûcheronne au pays
Stéphanie Bélanger-Naud est devenue la meilleure bûcheronne au Canada, le 27 juillet dernier, en remportant le championnat canadien Stihl Timbersport à Mississauga, en Ontario.
Le championnat comporte trois épreuves qui consistent à couper de larges billots de bois avec des scies différentes ou à la hache, et ce, le plus rapidement possible. Le pointage cumulé à la fin de la compétition déterminait la grande gagnante parmi les six bûcheronnes participantes.
La vague végé: vers un retour du pois jaune?
Au début du XXe siècle, alors que la soupe aux pois faisait partie intégrante du menu des Québécois, on le cultivait beaucoup ici, raconte David Wees, chargé de cours et agronome à l'Université ۲ݮƵ. L'intérêt s'est ensuite perdu dans les années 70. « La source de protéine a été remplacée par une autre source de protéine : la production animale », ajoute M. Chalifour.
Des aînés morts étouffés par leur grilled cheese
Stéphanie Chevalier, professeure associée à l'École de nutrition humaine de l'Université ۲ݮƵ, souligne elle aussi que le grilled cheese présente des risques particuliers parce qu'il est collant. Il le sera d'autant s'il est servi froid, par exemple à cause d'un délai pour le découper en morceaux, a-t-elle dit.
Adjunct Professor Pierre Lacasse named a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Animal Science
Congratulations to Dr. Pierre Lacasse, an Adjunct Professor in Animal Science, who has been made a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) in a recent annual meeting in Austin, Texas. The fellowship is awarded to CSAS members for truly outstanding contributions in any field of animal agriculture. Dr. Lacasse is a research scientist in Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre, AAFC.

Congratulations to NRS professor Joann Whalen, who was recently awarded the Auguste Scott prize given by the Association quebecoise de specialistes en science du sol (AQSSS). Other professors who won it previously were Dr. Gus Mackenzie and Dr. Guy Mehuys. The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to the field of soil science.

Today [June 20], Iain Stewart, President of the National Research Council, Canada's largest federal research and development organization, announced the results of the inaugural round of the NRC’s New Beginnings Initiative. The New Beginnings Initiative is part of the NRC’s Ideation Fund, which was announced in Budget 2018 to encourage, test and validate transformative research ideas generated by NRC researchers working with external collaborators.
Flesh flies invading the Laurentians, Eastern Townships
If you've been out in the Laurentians or the Eastern Townships lately, you may have noticed there've been a lot of flies - notably bigger varieties known as flesh flies.
They have been seen invading those communities to the point where some restaurants had to shut down their terrasses and residents can't enjoy their backyards.
