FMHS Peer Review

Internal peer review of grant applications

Eligibility

Applicants from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences located at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ campus or St. Mary’s Hospital are eligible for internal peer review. Applicants from other units have their own internal review programs.

Grant applications must have undergone internal peer review to be eligible for Internal Bridge Funding.

Submission Deadlines

Please visit individual funding program pages for respective submission deadlines:

Process

For eligible FMHS researchers submitting grant applications:

  1. Browse the FMHS College of Peer Reviewers, and contact up to 2 members of the College to request Internal Peer Review.
    • The College is organized by competition (e.g. CIHR, FRQS) - please select members for your specific competition.
    • Note: applicants may contact prospective peer reviewers whom are not members of the College (e.g. from within their home Department).
  2. If your prospective Peer Reviewer accepts, please share your proposal with them before the respective submission deadlines.
    • If your Peer Reviewer declines, please make a request to another member of the College. Please do not contact more than 2 members at once.
  3. Coordinate directly with your accepted Peer Reviewer(s) to receive comments and feedback on your grant application.
    • Please ensure you agree on the timeline to receive comments (e.g. within 1-2 weeks) with sufficient time to make updates before the grant deadline.
  4. Important - Final Step: Indicate on the RF Checklist that your grant has undergone FMHS Internal Peer Review
    • In the first section of the RF Checklist (under Principal Investigator), start by setting your Primary Faculty Appointment to "Medicine and Health Sciences".
    • A new "Faculty-specific section" will then pop up above the signatures section - please answer "Yes" to the question, "Has your grant been through the Internal Scientific Review?" - this is essential for internal tracking and to confirm eligibility for Internal Bridge Funding.

For support with any of the above steps, please contact riac.med [at] mcgill.ca.

For Reviewers

The main objective of internal review is to improve grantsmanship and accessibility to non-experts. Therefore, potential reviewers are encouraged to accept review requests even when lacking the ideal technical expertise (unless in conflict of interest).

  • Reviewers are asked to respond to requests for peer review within 1-2 days.
  • Reviewers are asked to share comments within 1-2 weeks of accepting requests.
    • Reviewers may also meet with the applicant in-person to convey additional feedback.
  • Reviewers should use the latest evaluation criteria for the competition in question.
  • The entire peer review process must be kept confidential.
