The specimen consists of the lower aorta with yellow atherosclerotic plaques around the ostium of one of the coronary arteries. Both right and left aortic valve leaflets are fenestrated (long arrows); however, as the descriptive card indicates for the student, the holes are above the line of closure of the leaflets (short arrows) and so would not have had functional significance.

Comment

The specimen was included in the ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ Abbott Cardiovascular Collection. An Osler tag in the back of the specimen (B) suggests it came from one of his autopsies. No clinical or other information is available to suggest which one. The descriptive card indicates the specimen was donated by George Adami, appointed Chairman of Pathology at ÎÛÎÛ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵ and the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1892 and it is possible that he recognized its provenance after accidentally noting the back tag.
